Dr. Balk joined the practice in September 2000. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery with the Certificate of Added Qualification in Hand Surgery.

After obtaining his undergraduate and medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania, he completed a residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Balk continued his training in hand and upper extremity surgery at Allegheny General Hospital, where he completed a one-year fellowship in August 2000.

Dr. Balk has a strong interest in education and has trained over 110 fellows in Hand & Upper Extremity Surgery through UPMC. He has lectured at professional meetings, continuing education courses, conferences, and symposia. He has completed voluntary assignments with Orthopedics Overseas in Malawi, Peru, Honduras & Costa Rica.

Dr. Balk, Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, is on the medical staff at UPMC Passavant/Cranberry, AHN Jefferson, AHN Wexford, and he also is on staff at Western PA Surgery Center, Southwestern Surgery Center, and Waterfront Surgery Center.
